Shahadat Hossain, the mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC), has announced a firm stance against illegal billboards and unauthorised advertisement structures to transform the city into a planned, clean, and aesthetic metropolis.
He stated that regular eviction drives would be conducted across the city to remove unauthorised billboards, banners, and posters, with the ultimate goal of making Chattogram billboard-free.
Following directives issued by the city corporation’s executive magistrate to the relevant departments, the initiative officially commenced at 2pm on Thursday with an operation to remove illegal billboards in the Kazir Dewri area.
The drive was carried out by a coordinated team comprising the magistrate’s unit, the engineering and conservancy departments, and members of law enforcement.
During the operation, various sizes of unauthorised billboards, banners, and posters were dismantled. Relevant officials noted that these structures had been obstructing road visibility, concealing traffic signals and signboards, and increasing the risk of accidents.
Following the eviction, visibility at the intersection improved, and the flow of traffic returned to normal.
While inspecting the drive, Shahadat emphasised that an integrated and continuous initiative has been launched to rid the city of billboard clutter.
He highlighted that the primary objectives of this move are to preserve the city’s beauty, maintain environmental balance, and ensure road safety. He further warned that legal action will be taken against any individual or organisation installing billboards without prior approval.
Mayor Shahadat clarified that all advertisements must comply with the City Corporation’s established policies. He added that regular monitoring and mobile courts would continue to ensure the removal of illegal structures remains an ongoing process.
Senior officials of the corporation were present during the drive. According to CCC sources, similar operations will be conducted in phases across other key roads and intersections to ensure a clean and disciplined city.
