An elderly man was killed and 30 others sustained injuries during a violent clash between two rival groups over establishing supremacy at Birampur village in Sadar upazila of Brahmanbaria district on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 65, son of Moiz Uddin from the same village.
Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Azharul Islam said a long-standing conflict between Harun Mia, a former chairman of Sadekpur Union Parishad, and the Sachu Group over local dominance had been escalating for some time.
The situation turned deadly in the morning when followers from both sides, armed with local weapons, engaged in a fierce clash. Nasir Uddin, a supporter of the Sachu Group, was killed on the spot while around 20 others were injured.
The deceased was taken to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
Following the incident, law enforcers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional forces have been deployed in the area to prevent any further violence.
