Malaysia has expressed its readiness to join a United Nations-led peacekeeping mission in Gaza, together with other nations including members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made the statement on Sunday during a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, reported by state-run news agency Bernama.
Anwar said in an official statement issued by his office, “Malaysia also reiterated its firm stance in support of the Palestinian struggle, and welcomed the UN’s consistent position as well as the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which affirmed the Israeli regime’s blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza constitutes a violation of international law.”
The meeting also covered Malaysia’s prospective role as the ASEAN chair, particularly in advancing peace efforts between Thailand and Cambodia and encouraging an inclusive political dialogue in Myanmar.
Meanwhile, under a 20-point US plan, a phased Gaza ceasefire between Hamas and Israel took effect on 10 October through regional and international mediation efforts.
Since Israel’s military campaign began in October 2023, more than 68,500 Palestinians have been killed and over 170,300 injured, according to figures from the Gaza Health Ministry.
