Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday told Parliament his recent trips to Malaysia and China were undertaken solely in the interest of Bangladesh and its people.
He also said any gains from the visits belong to the nation, not to any individual.
“What I have tried to do, Honorable Speaker, from my position is to speak for the interests of my country and the people of my country and to protect those interests,” he said.
The PM made the remarks while expressing gratitude to all lawmakers, including the Opposition Leader, for unanimously adopting a thanksgiving motion in the House on his six‑day visit to Malaysia and China.
Tarique noted that the people of Bangladesh had entrusted his government with the duty of safeguarding their interests.
“The core issue here is that the people of Bangladesh have given us the responsibility to look after their interests,” he said.
Citing his party’s slogan “Bangladesh First,” he said the principle guided efforts to uphold and protect national interests during the tours.
“None of us has any personal issue here. If any positive thing has been achieved, it is an achievement for Bangladesh. If the people of the country have gained any achievement through these visits, that achievement belongs to them,” he added.
The premier returned home Friday from Beijing, concluding his maiden six‑day overseas trip to Malaysia and China.
