Renowned writer-academic Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, and former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University (DU) ASM Maksud Kamal are set to be named as accused in a crimes against humanity case. The case relates to attacks carried out on students during the July mass uprising.
International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) investigation agency has submitted a probe report against eight individuals, including Kamal and Iqbal, to the prosecution. The report is expected to be filed as a formal charge in the tribunal following a thorough review.
On Thursday, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed that the investigation report had been submitted.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam stated that the report is currently under scrutiny. He added that formal charges would be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal shortly after the review process is complete.
In addition to the former DU vice-chancellor and Muhammad Zafar Iqbal – who is also a former teacher at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology – the list of accused includes AKM Jamal Uddin, a teacher in the Department of Sociology at Dhaka University, and Wali Asif Inan, the general secretary of Chhatra League.
According to the prosecution, the investigation agency submitted the report to the Chief Prosecutor’s office following an extensive probe into the attacks on Dhaka University students.
Necessary legal procedures will be followed to formalise the charges in the tribunal once the current review stage is concluded.
