Jahangirnagar University (JU) has launched a “Live Bus Tracking System” to modernise and simplify the transportation system for its students.
The initiative was introduced by the university unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).
Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan on Thursday formally inaugurated the service at a ceremony held near Murad Chattar area of the campus.
VC Kamrul said such technology-based initiatives would play a highly effective role in reducing the daily commuting hassles of students.
He remarked that although improving transport services is the responsibility of the university administration, this initiative by JCD deserves appreciation for considering the interests of the students.
VC Kamrul also expressed his gratitude to those involved on behalf of the university.
JCD Convener Jahiruddin Babor informed that the technology has been initially installed in two buses on an experimental basis. There are plans to gradually bring all university buses under this system.
Through this service, students can track the real-time location of buses via their mobile phones. Additionally, they will receive notifications regarding the estimated time of arrival at designated stops and information about any potential delays.
He expressed hope that this would make time management easier for the students.
Wasim Ahmed Anik, the member secretary of JCD, noted that the students have been suffering for a long time due to uncertainty in the transport system.
He highlighted that academic activities and classes are often disrupted because of the lack of reliable information regarding bus locations.
Anik added that JCD would continue to work for the benefit of students and maintain necessary initiatives to build a modern and student-friendly campus.
