Kriti Sanon has questioned the hypocrisy of people who invoked culture to criticise her outfit in a Raksha Bandhan advertisement, revealing that the online backlash also brought abusive comments to her parents’ and sister’s social media posts, writes Hindustan Times.
Speaking to Kareena Kapoor on her chat show ‘What Women Want’, the actor said the controversy had grown far beyond her choice of clothing.
She felt compelled to speak out because the episode reflected how women face constant scrutiny over their appearance and personal decisions.
Sanon said she usually ignores online trolls, but was disturbed to learn that people who spoke about culture and respect had targeted her family with abusive language.
Her sister even asked her to turn off the comments on her posts.
The controversy erupted after Sanon appeared in a jewellery advertisement for Raksha Bandhan wearing a contemporary outfit and tying a rakhi to her brother and pet dog.
The campaign drew criticism from some social media users, while actor Kangana Ranaut also objected to the advertisement. The brand later withdrew it.
Sanon had previously defended the campaign, saying cultural values should not be judged by a woman’s clothes.
