Brazil could return to the Indian subcontinent later this year, with Kolkata emerging as the likely venue for an international friendly in early October after the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) opened advanced talks with Indian organisers.
According to ESPN Brasil, later backed by Brazilian newspaper Estadão, negotiations have reached an advanced stage. Only the final contractual details remain before the proposed match receives official confirmation.
Brazil’s opponent has not yet been decided. As a result, there is no confirmation that the five-time world champions will face India. Organisers are still working to finalise the fixture.
The talks began during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Images and videos of thousands of supporters wearing Brazil shirts across India and neighbouring Bangladesh spread widely on social media. The remarkable scenes attracted attention inside Brazil and encouraged the CBF to explore the possibility of bringing the Selecao to the region.
Kolkata quickly emerged as the preferred destination because of its rich football culture and long-standing support for Brazil. Similar passion appeared across Kerala and Bangladesh throughout the World Cup.
The proposed fixture would complete Brazil’s schedule during the extended FIFA international window from September 21 to October 6. Carlo Ancelotti’s side already have two confirmed friendlies against Australia, with matches scheduled in Townsville on September 25 and Brisbane on September 29.
If the Kolkata match goes ahead, it will take place in the opening days of October after those two fixtures in Australia.
Reports also suggest organisers from Bangladesh, Singapore and Qatar expressed interest in hosting Brazil during the same window. However, discussions progressed only with India.
The CBF reportedly ruled out playing a fourth match because of concerns over travel, player recovery and preparation. Instead, the federation opted for a three-match programme while still acknowledging Brazil’s enormous popularity across the subcontinent.
A match in Kolkata would add another memorable chapter to the city’s connection with Brazilian football. Pelé famously played at Eden Gardens for New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan in 1977, a visit that remains one of Indian football’s most celebrated moments.
