Bangladesh women are about to step into unfamiliar territory, and they know it. The SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship in Bangkok marks the country’s first serious brush with a format still finding its feet back home.
This tournament matters less for medals and more for meaning. Bangladesh see it as a starting line, not a finishing tape.
Captain Sabina Khatun set the tone at the pre-tournament press conference on Sunday. “As you know I have played for Bangladesh national football team for many, many years. Futsal is new for me but I am here and hoping that we will do good in futsal as well, and the team is good and I’ll help the team.” Her confidence comes from leadership rather than familiarity with the court.
She also admitted the reality of the build-up. “Our preparation has been good. As the coach said that we got very short time and we are all new in Futsal. But I am hopeful, Inshallah we will do good in the tournament.” Hope, here, feels earned rather than naive.
Head coach Saeid Khodarahmi spoke with refreshing honesty. “You know, all players maybe football players. Because Bangladesh doesn’t have futsal.” That single line explains both the challenge and the ambition.
Futsal demands quicker decisions, tighter control and constant movement in compressed spaces. Football instincts help, but the game punishes hesitation far more ruthlessly.
Khodarahmi looked beyond this tournament when he added, “Need good plan from the country, and good foundation for start.” He framed SAFF as a lesson, not a verdict.
Bangladesh open against India before facing Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Maldives. Results will matter, but learning will matter more.
This is Bangladesh thinking long-term. They enter SAFF futsal knowing the scoreboard may swing, but believing the experience can anchor a future that finally gives the sport a proper home.
