The Shariatpur district unit of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish held a protest rally on Friday to press for five demands, including the ban on 14-party politics and the immediate implementation of the July Charter.
The procession started at 9:30am from Chourangi Mor in the district town and, after moving along key city roads, concluded at the central Shaheed Minar grounds, where party leaders addressed a brief gathering.
At the rally, Sabbir Ahmad Osmani, President of the district unit of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, said that the public’s demand for the immediate implementation of the July Charter must be fulfilled; otherwise, the caretaker government will fail to gain popularity. He also called for the banning of 14-party politics, accusing the National Party, an ally of the Awami League and a local agent of India, of exerting dominant influence in the country.
Osmani warned that holding upcoming elections without creating a level playing field would be a mistake. He said justice for those martyred or injured during the July movement has yet to be served and stressed that failure to implement proportional representation in the next national elections could return power to fascist forces.
He urged the caretaker government, formed with public support, to heed the five demands to ensure free and fair elections and prevent a repeat of the July movement.
Leaders and activists from the district and six upazilas attended the rally.
