Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has returned to Dhaka after being elected president of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
He arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 8:51am Thursday from the United States.
Khalilur did not speak to journalists at the airport, but sources said he may brief the media later in the day on his future plans at the UN.
On Tuesday, the minister was elected the UNGA president, defeating Cyprus candidate Andreas S Kakouris. Of the 190 votes cast, he secured 99 while Kakouris received 91. He will succeed Germany’s former foreign minister Annalena Baerbock and serve a one‑year term.
The 81st session of the UNGA will formally open on 8 September.
The high‑level general debate, featuring speeches by heads of state and government, will begin on 22 September, with Khalilur presiding.
This marks the second time a Bangladeshi representative has held the UNGA presidency. In 1986, former foreign minister Humayun Rashid Choudhury chaired the 41st session.
