Former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque’s release from jail has been halted as he was shown arrested in a case filed under the Explosives Act and for attempted murder in Dhaka’s Banani.
He was produced virtually from prison before a Dhaka court on Wednesday. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman passed the order.
This marks the ninth case in which he has been shown arrested. Although he has secured bail in eight cases, his release has been blocked due to this latest arrest order.
Moktar Hossain, deputy inspector of DMP’s Prosecution Division, said, “After Khairul Haque was shown arrested, a bail petition was filed. The hearing will be held in the concerned court at noon.”
Earlier, on 2 July, Banani Police Station Sub‑inspector Saiful Islam, the investigation officer, applied to show him arrested. Following the application, he was connected virtually from prison for the hearing.
Khairul Haque was first arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police on 24 July last year from his residence in Dhanmondi. That night, he was sent to jail in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad in Jatrabari during the July Uprising.
Later, he was shown arrested in two cases filed at Fatullah and Bandar police stations in Narayanganj. On 30 July of the same year, he was shown arrested in a corruption case filed with Shahbagh Police Station.
He was accused in a case filed over fabricating judgments during his tenure as judge.
On 28 April this year, the Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court upheld his bail in five cases. However, after securing bail, he was again shown arrested on 30 March in two separate cases — the murder of student Md Arif in Jatrabari and the murder of garment worker Rubel in Adabor.
On May 12, he secured bail from the High Court in these two cases, which the state later challenged. On 20 May, the chamber court of the Appellate Division upheld his bail.
