The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned the “indiscriminate attack by armed terrorists” on the hill communities in Guimara Bazar and suburbs of Khagrachari.
The organisation said this in a statement issued on Sunday, adding that the attacked had involved “vandalism of homes and places of worship, arson, and gunshot injuries to many people.”
It goes on to demand “that the government immediately stop the violence, arrest the miscreants, arrange compensation for the affected, and ensure proper medical treatment for the injured.”
On Saturday, activists continued a blockade in protest of the gang rape of a Marma schoolgirl. Authorities had imposed Section 144 in Khagrachhari municipality, Sadar upazila, and Guimara on Saturday afternoon in response, following earlier blockades on Friday and Saturday that had caused the situation to deteriorate.
According to local administration, several people were reportedly injured in clashes between hill and local residents in the district town on Saturday evening and again on Sunday.
