Train movement on the metro rail route between Karwan Bazar and Agargaon was suspended on Wednesday night due to a technical fault, officials said.
According to officials, metro services stopped at around 9:10pm. Ahsanullah Sharifi, Deputy Director (Public Relations) of MRT Line-6, confirmed the suspension to the media.
At around 9:45pm, Sharifi said, “Metro rail operations have been halted after a jolt was felt in the Bijoy Sarani–Farmgate section.” However, he could not provide further details.
Metro rail staff involved in operations said a bearing pad fell off near Farmgate – the same spot where an earlier incident had occurred – causing the jolt around 9:10pm. They added that train services between Uttara and Agargaon continued as usual.
Till the filing of this report, train movement on the Karwan Bazar–Agargaon section remained suspended.
Commuters who had to return from metro stations described severe inconvenience. The situation worsened as rain hit the capital at night, leading to heavy crowds on buses and doubling passenger suffering.
According to the regular schedule, the last train from Uttara North station departs at 9:30pm, while the final train from Motijheel leaves for Uttara North at 10:10pm.
Sources at the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) said there was little chance of metro operations resuming on Thursday night the Agargaon–Shahbagh section.
