Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested one of the accused in a case filed over the killing of Jubo Dal leader Maksudul Haque Chowdhury Masud in Raozan, Chattogram.
The arrest was made early Sunday in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The arrestee, Ayub, 45, of Kadolpur in Raozan, is a named accused in the case.
RAB‑7 Assistant Director (Media) ARM Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the arrest to Times of Bangladesh, saying further details would be shared at a press briefing.
According to police and witnesses, the incident occurred around 1:30pm near Pahartali Bazar adjacent to the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET).
Masud, vice president of the Betagi Union unit of Jubo Dal, was attacked by armed assailants. Witnesses said the attackers held a firearm to his head and shot him at close range before fleeing. He died on the spot.
Law enforcement later analysed CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrators. On 15 June, the victim’s brother, former chairman of Rangunia’s Betagi Union Parishad Muhammad Piarul Haque Chowdhury Swapan, filed the murder case at Raozan Police Station. The case names 11 individuals and includes seven to eight unidentified suspects.
Regarding the latest arrest, Officer‑in‑Charge Saiful Islam said that although Ayub was not visible in CCTV footage, preliminary information suggests he was present nearby at the time of the incident. Further investigations are underway.
