The Nationalist Teachers Forum at Jahangirnagar University (JU) has expressed concern and condemned the harassment of a Chattogram University law teacher during the admission test.
The initiative followed the public harassment of a Chattogram University law teacher during the admission test and the circulation of videos of the incident on social media.
In a statement sent to the media on Saturday night, leaders of the forum said that public humiliation, physical intimidation or threats against a teacher inside a higher education institution directly strike at the country’s social and education systems.
They noted that ideological or political differences must be addressed through the law, administrative inquiry and due justice. They described “mob justice” as unacceptable.
The statement added that teacher harassment, campus violence and mob culture have increased at several universities in recent times. The forum warned that such practices would severely disrupt the normal academic environment if they continue.
The forum called on the university administration to ensure the security and dignity of teachers. It demanded a full, neutral and prompt investigation into the incident and legal action against those responsible.
The Nationalist Teachers Forum reaffirmed its support for students’ democratic movements but described the act of degrading someone’s dignity through the abuse of power as a new form of fascist behaviour. It also demanded strict policy measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in future.
