Journalists formed a human chain in Dhaka demanding exemplary punishment of lawyer Mohiuddin Mahi, who allegedly assaulted Somoy TV journalist Asif Mohammad Siam.
The demonstration took place in the city’s Karwan Bazar area. Organised by the broader media community, the protest drew journalists and camera operators from several outlets.
Speakers warned that attacks on journalists often go unpunished, leaving media workers vulnerable. They stressed that while justice is delivered to other members of society, journalists are frequently denied it.
Protesters described the assault as an unprecedented global incident, pointing out that a lawyer attacked a reporter in front of a sitting judge. They demanded that lawyers who engage in violence lose their professional licences instead of being shielded.
Participants said the attack undermines judicial independence and poses a direct threat to free and independent journalism in Bangladesh.
