A delegation led by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President Tanaka Akihiko visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.
During the trip, they observed the humanitarian situation, development activities, and projects implemented for host communities.
Around 9:30am, the delegation visited the Madhurchhara‑4 (Extension) camp in Ukhiya. Later, they joined a views‑exchange meeting at the Camp‑in‑Charge office of Kutupalong registered camp.
The meeting discussed the Rohingya crisis, humanitarian operations, and future cooperation with the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC), government officials, and development partners.
RRRC Mizanur Rahman said, “This JICA mission will further strengthen the longstanding development cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan. JICA has played a vital role in humanitarian assistance and sustainable development for forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (FDMNs) and host communities.”
He added that since 2012, JICA has invested about USD 332 million in Cox’s Bazar across local governance, health, disaster risk management, education, livelihoods, fisheries, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and urban development. JICA has also supported RRRC with technical assistance, capacity building, UN volunteer deployment, training to prevent gender‑based violence, and institutional strengthening.
The meeting further discussed the long‑term impacts of the Rohingya crisis, continuity of humanitarian aid, improvement of essential services, disaster resilience, and advancing sustainable development by engaging host communities.
The delegation reviewed progress of ongoing projects and expressed interest in expanding future cooperation.
RRRC added, “JICA’s steadfast support is crucial for Bangladesh. We believe this enduring partnership will strengthen coordination of humanitarian activities and play an effective role in building a more resilient, safe, and dignified future for both Rohingya and host communities in Cox’s Bazar.”
