US Vice-President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance have announced the birth of their fourth child, a baby boy named Alec Neel Vance. The infant was born on Sunday morning, according to a statement released by the vice-president on social media.
He confirmed that both his wife and the newborn are “happy and healthy”, while their three older children are “overjoyed to meet their little brother,” reports BBC.
Vance also expressed his gratitude to the military doctors and medical staff at the Walter Reed Medical Center for their professional care.
This birth marks a historic milestone, as it is the first time in more than 150 years that a baby has been born to a sitting vice-president while in office. The couple’s other children include Ewan, aged nine; Vivek, aged six; and Mirabel, aged four.
Second Lady Usha Vance (née Chilukuri) was raised in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California, by parents who immigrated to the United States from Andhra Pradesh, India. Her father is a mechanical engineer, and her mother is a molecular biologist.
The couple first met in 2010 as students at Yale Law School, where they were members of a discussion group focused on “social decline in white America”. Vance has notably been one of the most vocal members of the Trump administration in calling for higher birth rates in the US.
In a recently published book, he revealed that while Usha was initially reluctant to have another child, her perspective changed following the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk last year.
Reflecting on the pregnancy, Vance wrote that “one life was stolen from us, but another was given,” noting that they buried his friend not long before discovering they were expecting their fourth child.
