Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said on Thursday that although the party will attend the signing ceremony of the July Charter, it has not yet decided whether to sign it.
He disclosed his party’s decision at a seminar titled “Legal Basis of July National Charter, Referendum and PR-Based Election” held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh in Dhaka.
“We must implement the July Charter and the PR system. Everyone should stay on the streets until the July Charter is implemented,” Golam Parwar said.
He warned that holding a referendum and national election simultaneously could lead to chaos, adding that November would be the appropriate time for the referendum.
He also demanded that all proposals from the National Consensus Commission be included in the referendum.
Golam Parwar further alleged that a group of people in the government are making administrative transfers under the instruction of a particular political party, and partisan individuals are being appointed to key positions.
Speaking at the event, Islami Andolan Bangladesh Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmed said the government must implement the July Charter.
Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad expressed doubts over the legal basis of the July Charter, saying it must be legitimised through a referendum.
He warned that if the referendum is obstructed, BNP could face a fate similar to Awami League. The seminar was attended by political leaders, retired judges, and civil society members.
