Police have arrested Jamaat leader Mizanur Rahman Mizan, 34, for allegedly assaulting eight police officers, including the officer-in-charge, at Palashbari Police Station.
The arrest was confirmed on Friday afternoon by Palashbari police OC Sarwar Alam Khan.
Mizan was apprehended early Friday morning in a joint operation by local police and the Detective Branch from his home in Gridhari Pur village.
Mizanur Rahman Mizan currently serves as secretary of the professional wing of Palashbari Upazila Jamaat. He is the son of Golam Mostofa and was formerly the Amir of Palashbari municipal Jamaat and president of Palashbari Upazila Chhatra Shibir.
The incident follows a confrontation on the night of 25 March. Leaders of the youth wing of Palashbari Upazila Jamaat arrived at the police station with a complaint letter and reportedly pressured the OC to take immediate action.
A verbal dispute escalated into a scuffle, leaving the OC and eight police personnel injured. Police subsequently filed a case naming nine individuals.
OC Sarwar Alam Khan said Friday that two suspects have now been arrested and efforts to apprehend the remaining accused are ongoing.
