A Dhaka court on Thursday sent former joint secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha to jail after completion of his remand in a case filed over creating blockades with sand-laden trucks in front of Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence and spraying pepper spray to prevent her from attending a rally.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order following an application from investigating officer of the case. Sub-Inspector Moktar Hossain of Prosecution Division confirmed the matter.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) arrested Jaglul Pasha from his Basundhara residence in Dhaka on 4 August. On the following day, the investigating officer, Inspector Anwar Hossain of DB Police Gulshan Zonal Team, presented him before the court and sought a 10-day remand.
The court sent the accused to jail and scheduled remand hearing for Thursday, on which day the court ordered a seven-day remand. Following completion of the remand, Inspector Anwar produced Jaglul Pasha in court on Thursday and filed an application to keep him in custody.
Defence counsel Advocate Abul Kalam Azad filed a petition seeking bail for the accused and requested a hearing on Sunday. The court subsequently sent the accused to jail and set Sunday for bail hearing.
According to the case statement, on 28 December 2013, Jaglul Pasha along with 111 accused named in First Information Report (FIR) and another 250 to 300 unidentified individuals positioned themselves in front of Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence from the morning.
Armed with deadly weapons, they stayed there all day and allegedly assaulted leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliate organisations. The accused also engaged in subversive activities, blocked the road, and created terror on street to ensure Khaleda Zia could not attend the rally.
The statement further said that in accordance with scheduled programme, when Khaleda Zia and her entourage prepared to leave for rally at 9am on 29 December 2013, the accused obstructed them.
They placed barricades by parking sand-laden trucks and various other trucks on the road. Despite repeated attempts by Khaleda Zia to proceed, the accused blocked her path and used banned pepper spray, which resulted in injuries to Khaleda Zia and her accompanying leaders and activists.
The case was filed on 4 October 2024 with Gulshan Police Station by former joint secretary of Rajshahi University Latif Hall branch of Chhatra Dal Shariful Islam Shaon.
In addition to this case, Jaglul Pasha faces allegations of preparing forged documents and giving false testimony in court in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust case against Khaleda Zia.
