Zahed Ur Rahman, adviser to the prime minister on the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has said fuel prices may need to be increased if the Iran war goes on for a long time.
He made the remarks at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday, addressing various government activities since the BNP came to power.
He added, “If this takes effect and continues for a long time, the situation will really worsen. It would be difficult for the government to continue subsidies indefinitely.”
Zahed also said, “The government has already announced that fuel prices will not be raised in April. But if the Iran crisis persists, adjustments may be necessary in the coming days.”
Last week, the government formed a six-member cabinet committee headed by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury to review whether fuel and gas prices should be increased.
Meanwhile, the government has already raised the price of furnace oil used in oil-fired power plants. However, diesel, octane, and petrol prices have not been adjusted this month and are still being sold at previous rates.
