Cult favourite animated series Invader Zim will return in 2026 with a new comic series, bringing back the popular Nickelodeon franchise after years of fan demand, reported on SCREENRANT.
BOOM! Studios will publish the new series, which will arrive five years after the previous comic run ended. The publisher, known for adapting major franchises including Power Rangers, Buffy and Supernatural, has announced that comic creators Jim Zub and Dax Gordine will join the revival.
The new series marks another chapter for Invader Zim, which Nickelodeon cancelled in 2002. Despite its early cancellation, the show developed a strong following and continued to attract fans long after it left television.
From 2015 to 2021, Oni Comics handled the Invader Zim comic series. Creator Jhonen Vasquez helped oversee that run, which received positive responses from fans.
However, the upcoming revival has created some uncertainty because Vasquez expressed mixed feelings about the project.
In an Instagram post on July 3, Vasquez said he felt disappointed that BOOM! Studios did not contact him about the new comic before announcing it. He said he discovered the news around the same time as fans. Although he did not attack the publisher, his comments suggested that he wanted more communication about the revival.
New writer Jim Zub later addressed the issue on his personal blog. Zub said Invader Zim holds a special place for him and explained that he believed Vasquez had approved the project when he joined. He added that BOOM! Studios contacted Vasquez after the matter came to light to resolve the situation.
Despite the behind-the-scenes concerns, the new series has several reasons for optimism. BOOM! Studios has received positive reactions for its licensed comics, particularly its work on Power Rangers.
The creative team has also attracted attention. Jim Zub has worked on several major comic projects for Marvel and DC and previously collaborated with BOOM! Studios on the Adventure Time comic series. Artist Dax Gordine has contributed artwork to various Marvel titles, including Spider-Man.
With a strong creative team and continued fan interest, Invader Zim appears ready for another comeback. The success of Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus showed that the franchise still has a strong audience, and fans will now wait to see whether BOOM! Studios can continue that legacy with the 2026 comic series.
