Police have arrested the alleged leader of an inter-district robbery gang in Narail’s Kalia upazila during a special operation, officials said.
The suspect, Aroz Ali Sheikh, 50, was arrested from his residence in Jokarchar village around 8pm on Wednesday following a prolonged surveillance operation based on secret information, police said. He is the son of Hemayet Sheikh of the same village.
According to police, members of the law enforcement team mingled with local residents throughout the day to monitor Aroz Ali’s movements before carrying out the planned operation.
The operation was led by Kalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Idris Ali.
Police records show that Aroz Ali is accused in several cases involving allegations of robbery, terrorism, arms and theft.
Five cases have been filed against him at Kalia Police Station, while two cases are pending at Narail Sadar Police Station. He is also accused in one case each at Digholia Police Station in Khulna and Gopalganj Sadar Police Station.
OC Md Idris Ali said the arrested man was being interrogated.
“Efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members of the inter-district robbery gang based on information obtained from him. The operation is continuing,” he said.
