Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam has called on private television channels in Bangladesh to formulate and publicly disclose their own codes of conduct.
He made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with representatives of the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) at the ministry’s conference room.
Speaking at the meeting, Adviser Mahfuj Alam said that by making their codes of conduct publicly available, private broadcasters would enhance transparency and allow the public to assess whether the channels are adhering to ethical standards. “This will increase public accountability for the channels,” he noted.
The adviser also discussed the ongoing initiative to digitise the country’s cable television system. He said stakeholder consultations have already begun and that another round of discussions would be held soon. Based on the feedback received, the government plans to formulate a comprehensive policy on cable TV digitalisation.
Mahfuj Alam further said that discussions are underway with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited regarding television rating points (TRP). He expressed optimism that a decision would be reached soon on this matter.
During the meeting, ATCO representatives emphasiaed the importance of transitioning to a fully digital cable television system and proposed setting a timeline for the conversion. They also urged the government to ensure that stakeholders are consulted before drafting any new laws or policies concerning private broadcasters.
ATCO leaders noted that currently, private TV channels operate without any interference or pressure from the government.
Information and Broadcasting Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, ATCO Treasurer Zahir Uddin Mahmood Mamun, and directors Mostafa Kamal, Abdus Salam, Navidul Haque, and Tipu Alam Milon were also present at the meeting.
Prior to the meeting, Adviser Mahfuj Alam briefed journalists on various issues related to the ministry.
