A nine-month-old infant has died from measles in Chuadanga, marking the first recorded fatality from the viral infection in the district.
The deceased child, identified as Humaira Khatun, was the daughter of Humayun Iqbal, a resident of Nimtalapara in Deenathpur village under Sadar Upazila.
Dr Najmus Sakib, the Acting Residential Medical Officer (RMO) of Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, confirmed the death, stating it was the first measles-related fatality in the district. The child was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on Friday morning, where the duty doctor declared her dead.
According to hospital records, Humaira was first admitted to the paediatric ward of the Sadar Hospital on 15 April with symptoms of measles. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to the hospital’s Measles Isolation Ward on 19 April.
Clinical tests later confirmed the infection after samples sent to Dhaka returned a positive result.
The infant had been discharged from the hospital on 23 April following treatment.
However, her health took a sudden turn for the worse on Friday morning at her home, leading to her death shortly after being rushed back to the medical facility.
Hospital sources revealed that five other patients with measles symptoms are currently undergoing treatment at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital. To date, approximately 50 patients in the district have received medical care for measles or related symptoms
