India fast bowler Gurnoor Brar has been officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during India’s six-wicket victory over England in the first ODI at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
Brar was found to have violated Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “throwing a ball at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.”
The incident took place in the eighth over of England’s innings after Ben Duckett drove the ball back towards the bowler. Brar threw the ball back in Duckett’s direction, prompting the charge.
The pacer admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. It is Brar’s first disciplinary offence in the past 24 months.
Brar conceded 26 runs in his opening two overs before switching ends and striking twice in the same over to dismiss Duckett and Jacob Bethell. He finished with figures of 2 for 61 from nine overs but was unable to complete his spell after clutching his right calf while preparing to bowl the 48th over.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Mike Burns, third umpire Sam Nogajski, and fourth umpire Russell Warren.
Level 1 offences under the ICC Code of Conduct carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
India lead the three-match ODI series 1-0, with the second match scheduled in Cardiff on Thursday.
