The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on Wednesday recorded testimony against Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the information and communication technology adviser to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and former state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak in a case related to crimes committed during the July mass uprising.
CID forensic expert Atiqur Rahman testified before the tribunal as an expert witness. He was later cross-examined by Palak’s lawyers Aminul Gani Tito and Liton Ahmed, and by state-appointed lawyer Manjur Alam representing Joy.
Following the cross-examination, the tribunal set 12 April for the next round of testimony.
According to the prosecution’s allegations, during the mass uprising, orders to shut down the internet came from Sajeeb Wazed Joy, with Zunaid Ahmed Palak implementing those orders. The prosecution claims these activities constitute crimes against humanity.
The tribunal framed charges against the accused on 21 January, formally commencing the trial. Earlier, on 18 February, the prosecution had presented its opening statement, describing Joy and Palak as among the masterminds of the July massacre.
The defence has denied all allegations. Palak’s lawyer told the tribunal that his client did not order the internet shutdown, claiming such decisions originated from the Ministry of Home Affairs. He further stated that efforts were made to resolve issues through discussion to avoid untoward incidents and prevent the spread of rumors.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy is currently absconding, while Zunaid Ahmed Palak is in custody. Palak was produced before the tribunal from jail for the hearing and claimed innocence when charges were framed.
The tribunal took cognizance of the charges against Joy and Palak on 4 December. At the time, an arrest warrant was issued against Joy, while Palak, already in custody, was shown arrested on charges of crimes against humanity. A total of three charges have been brought against Joy and Palak.
