The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has formally accepted charges against Hasanul Haq Inu, former Information minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) president, in connection with the killing of seven individuals during last year’s July Uprising in Kushtia.
The tribunal has scheduled 29 September to begin the charge-framing hearing, where Inu has been ordered to appear in person.
Seven people were killed and several others injured during the student-led movement in July and August of 2024.
Following the killings, a case was filed against Inu at the ICT over the crimes against humanity
On Thursday, prosecutors Saimum Reza Talukder and Abdullah Al Noman submitted the formal charges at ICT-2. During a subsequent press briefing, Prosecutor Gazi M H Tamim revealed that eight separate charges had been filed against Inu.
“The formal charge runs 39 pages and includes a list of 20 prosecution witnesses, alongside three audio clips and six video recordings as part of the evidence,” said Tamim. He added that investigators found clear evidence linking Inu to the alleged crimes.
Inu was previously arrested on 26 August, 2024 in Dhaka’s Uttara area and remains in jail amid multiple ongoing investigations. The tribunal had earlier ordered his detention in relation to the crimes against humanity case.
Inu, who contested the 12th national parliamentary election as a coalition candidate, was defeated in his home constituency in Kushtia by a rebel candidate from the Awami League.
