A 37-year-old woman was killed by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an immigration enforcement raid in Minneapolis, according to local authorities.
The woman had been identified as Renee Nicole Good who presented as a legal observer amid protests opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
After the fatal shooting, demonstrators rapidly assembled near the site, chanting slogans such as “Shame! Shame! Shame,” and “ICE out of Minnesota!” Federal officers wearing gas masks and carrying heavy weapons confronted some protesters, deploying chemical agents to disperse the crowd.
Similar spontaneous demonstrations were reported across several US cities later on Wednesday, as the Trump administration maintained that the ICE officer involved had acted in “self-defence”.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly criticised the incident, saying, “this was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying”, and directly telling ICE personnel: “Get out of our city.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also condemned the killing, calling it “totally predictable” and “totally avoidable”. While urging protesters to remain peaceful, he confirmed that the state’s National Guard had been placed on alert.
Videos shared online by witnesses appear to capture the moments leading up to the shooting, which occurred at approximately 10:25 local time.
The footage shows a maroon SUV blocking a residential road, with protesters standing along the sidewalk and multiple law enforcement vehicles nearby. Immigration agents approach the SUV, exit their vehicle, and instruct the woman in the driver’s seat to get out.
One agent pulls at the driver’s door handle, while another positions himself near the front of the vehicle. As the SUV begins to move away, gunfire erupts. Three shots can be heard before the vehicle veers out of control and collides with a white car parked along the street.
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the woman’s actions as “domestic terrorism” and confirmed that ICE operations in Minneapolis would proceed as planned.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump claimed that an ICE officer had been “viciously” run over, adding, “It is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital.” He also accused the “Radical Left” of “threatening, assaulting, and targeting our Law Enforcement Officers and ICE Agents on a daily basis”.
Later speaking to reporters, Noem referred to the death as “preventable” but reiterated that the agent fired in self-defence, asserting that Good had used her vehicle as a “deadly weapon” against officers.
She said further details would emerge following an FBI investigation and noted that the same officer injured during Wednesday’s incident had previously been struck by a vehicle while on duty in June.
In contrast, the Minneapolis City Council said Good had been “caring for her neighbors” at the time she was killed. Authorities, including the FBI, have launched investigations into the incident, which occurred after agents on foot surrounded a vehicle on a snow-covered residential street, as shown in online videos.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin also claimed that Good was deliberately targeting agents, alleging she had “weaponised” her vehicle.
“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots,” McLaughlin wrote on the social media platform X, characterising the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism”.
