Helena Bonham Carter has stepped away from the upcoming fourth season of ‘The White Lotus’, with the role now set to be rewritten and recast, HBO has confirmed.
In a statement, the network said the character created for Bonham Carter by series creator Mike White did not align as production got underway. HBO added that the role is being reworked and will be recast in the coming weeks. The team expressed disappointment at the change and said they remain hopeful of collaborating with the actress in the future.
Bonham Carter was first announced as part of the Season 4 ensemble in January. Filming for the new season has already begun.
The latest instalment of the Emmy-winning series features a large ensemble cast including Vincent Cassel, Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, Chris Messina, Alexander Ludwig, Ari Graynor, AJ Michalka, Chloe Bennet, Sandra Bernhard, Heather Graham, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Rosie Perez and others.
Season 4 is set in France, with locations spanning Paris, Cannes and the French Riviera. Production is taking place across several luxury hotels, including properties in the Côte d’Azur region.
The storyline will follow a new group of guests and hotel staff over the course of a week, with events unfolding during the Cannes Film Festival.
Series creator Mike White returns as writer, director and executive producer. Filming is currently ongoing across multiple French locations.
