The High Court on Thursday fixed 9 July to deliver its verdict on a rule challenging the candidacy of BNP nominee Sarwar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari) constituency in the 13th parliamentary election.
The date was set after the bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Asif Hasan concluded hearing arguments from both sides.
Advocate Ahsanul Karim and Advocate AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon represented the petitioner, while Advocates Shishir Monir and Azim Uddin Patwari appeared for Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Nurul Amin.
The legal dispute arises from the Election Commission’s decision to cancel Sarwar Alamgir’s nomination over allegations of loan default.
The High Court later stayed the EC order and allowed him to contest the election.
Challenging that decision, Nurul Amin sought leave to appeal before the Appellate Division.
On 3 February, the Appellate Division granted leave to appeal, allowing Sarwar to remain in the election but ordering that the result would remain withheld until the appeal is finally resolved.
Although Sarwar Alamgir won the 12 February parliamentary election, the result has not been published due to the court’s directive.
On 16 June, the Appellate Division directed the High Court to dispose of the pending rule.
It also ordered that publication of the election result, issuance of the gazette notification and Sarwar’s oath of office would remain suspended until the High Court delivers its judgment.
