The High Court has issued a rule questioning why the repeated placement of former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy under “shown arrest” in consecutive cases should not be declared illegal.

The court also directed the authorities not to harass or arrest her in any new cases.

On Sunday, a High Court bench comprising justice Razik-Al-Jalil and Debasish Roy Chowdhury passed the order. Advocates Sara Hossain and Motahar Hossain Saju appeared in court on behalf of Ivy.

Following the hearing, Advocate Saju told TIMES of Bangladesh that although Ivy had obtained bail from the High Court, she was subsequently “shown arrested” in two new cases. A writ petition was filed challenging the legality of these “shown arrests.”

In response, the court issued the rule and provided protection against further arrests or harassment in new proceedings.

The legal complications stem from an incident on the evening of 20 July 2024, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, when a garment worker named Minarul Islam was shot in the Adamjee area.

He was later pronounced dead by doctors at the 300-bed hospital in Khanpur, Narayanganj.

On 23 September, the victim’s brother, Nazmul, filed a murder case at Siddhirganj Police Station.

The case named 132 individuals, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with 300 unidentified persons. Ivy is the 12th accused named in the First Information Report (FIR) of that case, and several other cases were subsequently filed against her.
