A female police officer has reportedly died by suicide at her rented home in the capital’s Dakshinkhan area, following a domestic dispute with her husband.
The deceased was identified as Raziya Sultana, 28, a Police Nayek, currently posted at the Armed Police Battalion Headquarters.
Her body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue, where an autopsy was conducted on Friday afternoon.
Raziya was the daughter of Md Nasir Uddin Bachchu of Nayabari village in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal.
Dakshinkhan Police Sub-inspector Palash Ahmed said Raziya lived in a rented house in the Mollartek area of Dakshinkhan.
Her husband, Rajib Mia, is a police constable posted on the Bhanga highway in Faridpur. Rajib’s home is in Zajira upazila of Shariatpur District.
According to the officer, Rajib told police that an argument broke out between the couple on Thursday after Raziya damaged her iPhone 12 Pro Max. She had earlier broken another mobile phone. The disagreement led to a brief quarrel.
According to the police, Raziya reportedly hanged herself inside the room sometime between 9.20pm and 9.40pm on Thursday.
Her husband later found her and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead shortly after midnight.
Rajib Mia’s friend, Shamim Al Mahin, said the couple met during police training after Rajib joined the force. Their relationship later turned into marriage about five years ago. They have a 19-month-old daughter.
Because of their postings, Raziya lived in Dhaka while Rajib stayed in Faridpur. He visited his wife in Dhaka every week, Shamim said.
He added that they learned on Thursday night that Raziya had taken her own life. They later went to the hospital and saw her body. He said they did not know what led her to take the step.
Police said they are continuing their investigation into the incident.
