Bangladesh midfielder Hamza Choudhury arrived in Dhaka on Monday ahead of the national team’s upcoming fixtures against India in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, expressing confidence that this time, the outcome against India will be different.
The 28-year-old, who made his Bangladesh debut in Shillong earlier this year in a goalless draw against India, landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to a warm reception from Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) officials. Despite missing his original flight due to heavy traffic in England, Hamza managed to arrive within schedule on a later connection, personally covering his travel costs.
“Thank you for such a wonderful welcome. I’m back in Dhaka and looking forward to a big match against India, Inshallah,” Hamza said in a BFF video message after his arrival. “Before that, we have a game against Nepal. We couldn’t win the last one, but the team showed improvement. We’re working hard and feeling excited. Hopefully, we’ll win against India.”
Hamza, who plays for Leicester City in England, will join the national camp immediately as Bangladesh prepare to face Nepal on 13 November and India on 18 November, both matches scheduled at the Dhaka National Stadium.
His first match in Bangladesh colours came in March against India in Shillong, where his commanding presence in midfield drew widespread praise from fans and analysts alike. Though the match ended 0–0, Hamza’s ball recovery, leadership, and tactical awareness stood out as a sign of what he brings to the national setup.
This time, the stakes are higher. Bangladesh have earned two draws and suffered two defeats in their four qualifying matches so far, effectively ending their Asian Cup hopes after a 1-1 draw with Hong Kong on 14 October. Yet, the home crowd and the return of one of their most recognisable names have renewed optimism within the squad.
Bangladesh will train at the Kings Arena this week before shifting their full focus to the two home fixtures that could shape the team’s long-term trajectory.
As Hamza summed up, “We’re all excited. Everyone’s working hard. Hopefully, we’ll win this time.”
