Manchester City reclaimed the initiative in the Premier League title race with a hard-earned and thoroughly entertaining victory over leaders Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side are now three points adrift of the summit but hold a game in hand on their rivals, meaning the championship could yet come down to goal difference.

The match had been billed as the biggest Premier League occasion in years — described by Guardiola himself as a “final” — and it more than lived up to its billing. Any expectation of a cagey, tight affair was swiftly dispelled by Mikel Arteta’s bold tactical approach, as Arsenal pressed high with relentless intensity from the very first whistle. Indeed, 56.2% of the opening fifteen minutes was played in City’s defensive third, leaving the hosts with little choice but to push forward themselves whenever the opportunity arose.

And on one of City’s very first forays forward, it was Rayan Cherki who produced the moment of magic to break the deadlock. The Frenchman received the ball on the edge of the area, drifted past two Arsenal players and slotted through the legs of a third and into the far corner. It was a stunning finish, and it made Cherki the first player to reach double figures for both goals and assists in all competitions in the Premier League this season — remarkable, given it is his first campaign in English football.

Arsenal responded almost immediately, and in unusual circumstances. David Raya launched a long ball deep into City territory straight from kick-off, and when Matheus Nunes returned the throw-in to Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Italian goalkeeper hesitated. Kai Havertz, deployed up front in place of Viktor Gyökeres, pounced, charged down the clearance, and the ball rolled into the empty net. Just 107 seconds separated the two goals — an extraordinary passage of play.

The sides went in level at half-time, which Arsenal would likely have accepted. However, those inside the stadium were reminded that only a week earlier, City had blown Chelsea away with three quick goals at the start of the second half at Stamford Bridge, and the hosts came roaring out of the blocks once more. Erling Haaland struck the post from a corner, and Antoine Semenyo spurned a gilt-edged chance after failing to control a ball in behind. Arsenal, meanwhile, had gone more than forty minutes without a shot and the game threatened to slip from their grasp.

The Gunners did manufacture two enormous opportunities in quick succession on rare counter-attacks. First, Martin Ødegaard picked out Havertz, only for Donnarumma to deny the German from close range. Moments later, Eberechi Eze’s effort from the edge of the area beat the City goalkeeper, only to cannon off the inside of the post and across the face of goal. Those misses would ultimately prove decisive.

City reasserted their dominance and, when Jérémy Doku drove forward down the left and fed Nico O’Reilly, who rolled the ball across goal, Haaland was on hand at the far post to finish from eight yards. It was, once again, Arsenal’s tormentor inflicting the damage. The Norwegian has now scored six Premier League goals in eight appearances against Arsenal — only Sergio Agüero (8 in 15) and Kevin De Bruyne (8 in 16) have netted more for either side in Premier League meetings between the two clubs.

Arsenal pressed for a leveller and came agonisingly close when Gabriel’s header from a set-piece cannoned back off the post via a deflection from O’Reilly — making this the first Premier League match this season in which both sides have struck the woodwork at least twice. But the clearest of those late chances fell to Havertz deep into stoppage time, and the German planted a free header from directly in front of goal over the crossbar. The Arsenal players sank to their knees. It was the last opportunity they would get.
