A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to Samir Quader Chowdhury and Shakir Quader Chowdhury, the two sons of BNP Central Committee Vice Chairman and current Member of Parliament for the Chattogram-6 (Raozan) constituency, Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury.
The court also granted bail to another accused, Marina Ershad, following their surrender through their lawyers before the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Awlad Hossain Mohammad Junaid.
Sub-Inspector Dhaka Metropolitan Police Prosecution Department Moktar Hossain confirmed the development.
The bail was granted in a case involving the alleged forcible occupation of an industrialist’s flat in the capital’s Gulshan area, as well as the assault and intimidation of the industrialist’s family members.
Previously, on 1 April, the court had cancelled the bail and issued arrest warrants for four individuals in connection with the case.
In addition to the three who surrendered on Thursday, the bail for another accused, Ashikur Rahman, had also been revoked. Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury, who is the brother of the late Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, is also an accused in this case.
According to the case statement, the accused had long been attempting to forcibly occupy the flats on the second and third floors of the complainant’s residential building. On 3 December last year, at approximately 11:30am, the accused led an illegal entry into the ground floor of the six-storey building.
They allegedly broke the door to the complainant’s office and looted furniture and equipment, including a fax machine, printer, and router, valued at Tk 5 lakh, which they transported away in a mini pick-up. An additional Tk 2 lakh in damages was also reported.
The following day, when the complainant attempted to repair the ground floor, the accused – armed with iron rods, pipes, wooden sticks, and hammers – trespassed again, using abusive language and threatening the complainant’s life to force them out of the house.
The complaint further states that when the accused were asked to stop, they physically assaulted the complainant, Farzana Anna Islam, with punches and kicks.
When her son intervened to protect her, the accused allegedly beat them both with sticks and iron rods, causing bloody injuries to their heads, backs, and bodies.
The situation was eventually brought under control after the plaintiff’s son contacted the national emergency service 999, prompting Gulshan Police to intervene at the scene.
The case was officially filed at Gulshan Police Station on December 10 last year by the plaintiff, Farjana Anna Islam.
