Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Friday alleged that the government is attempting to establish a one-party system by placing its supporters in key positions across various state institutions.
He claimed that individuals aligned with the ruling party are being appointed to important posts in banks, universities, and local government bodies, including vice-chancellors and district council chairpersons. “The people of the country will not accept such a system,” he said.
Shafiqur Rahman made the remarks while addressing a workers’ rally organised by Narayanganj city Jamaat at the Central Eidgah ground in Narayanganj city.
Referring to the previous Awami League government, he said it had often belittled opposition parties in Parliament, particularly the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.
He further alleged that the current government is continuing similar practices by targeting and labelling opposition parties in various ways. “But the people of the country do not accept these narratives,” he added.
Urging a change in approach, he called on the government to understand the sentiments of the younger generation. “Do not follow the path of the Awami League,” he said.
The rally was presided over by Narayanganj city Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Jabbar.
Among others, Jamaat central executive council member Saiful Alam Khan, Dhaka South city unit Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, and Islami Chhatra Shibir President Nurul Islam Saddam also addressed the programme.
