Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has announced plans to construct a monorail-based feeder network that will integrate with the existing metro rail system in Dhaka.

Presenting the 2026–27 budget in Parliament on Thursday, the minister outlined a vision for a modern public transport network linking six Metro Rail lines with the new monorail service.

Khosru also revealed plans for major infrastructure projects, including a second Jamuna Bridge, a third Meghna Bridge, and the Dhaka–Chattogram Elevated Expressway. These initiatives aim to accelerate economic growth, modernise transport, and enhance urban mobility with safe, technology-driven, and environmentally friendly systems.

In addition, the government will implement 94 projects to upgrade highways and key economic corridors to four lanes, creating multimodal hubs and improving road safety. The Bangladesh Road Safety Project has been revived under a “safety system approach,” including automated fitness certificates and expanded professional driver training.

The finance minister further announced the development of a national expressway grid spanning roughly 3,000 kilometres, along with ring roads and radial roads to ease chronic congestion in Dhaka.

The budget also introduces electronic tolling, smart traffic management, and the gradual replacement of old buses with electric vehicles as part of a green energy initiative.

These measures reflect the government’s long-term plan to integrate advanced transport infrastructure while promoting sustainability and efficiency across the country’s road and urban transport networks.
