Chinese zipper manufacturer SBS Zipper Bangladesh Co. Ltd has started commercial production at Bepza Economic Zone in Mirsarai, Chattogram, following an investment of more than $15.51 million.
The project is expected to generate employment for 2,063 Bangladeshi nationals at full capacity. Currently, the factory employs 140 Bangladeshi workers.
The commercial operation was inaugurated on Tuesday morning through a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Bepza Economic Zone-1 Executive Director Abdullah Al Mahbub, SBS Zipper Chairman Ding Zhaoquan, and SBS Zipper Bangladesh CEO Shen Weifang, along with other senior officials and foreign buyers.
According to Bepza, the investment and land lease agreement with SBS Zipper was signed on 23 April 2024. Against a committed investment of $19.97 million, the company has already invested $15.51 million. The foundation stone was laid in December 2024.
The factory has been established on six industrial plots in the economic zone. It plans to produce 271 million pieces of metal, nylon and plastic zippers annually, alongside sliders, chains, zipper components and tapes, plastic buttons, button components and moulds.
SBS Zipper is one of the world’s leading zipper manufacturers, ranking first in China and second globally in zipper production, according to Bepza.
Abdullah Al Mahbub said Bepza Economic Zone in Mirsarai had emerged as a major driver of export-oriented industrialisation and a destination for diversified foreign investment. He said the commencement of production by SBS Zipper had added a new dimension to the zone’s industrial potential, which already hosts businesses in garments, footwear and underwear.
According to Bepza, 263 of the zone’s 279 industrial plots have been allocated, while 14 enterprises have commenced commercial production. Construction of factories by 17 other enterprises is underway.
Bepza said the new factory would strengthen backward linkages in Bangladesh’s garment industry by supplying quality accessories locally. It is also expected to create jobs, reduce reliance on imported garment accessories and contribute to export earnings. The company aims to supply essential accessories to Bangladesh’s garment industry and expand its business in Southeast Asian markets.
