The Bangladesh government is focusing on China to modernise its air force, particularly through the potential acquisition of Chinese fighter aircraft, according to prime minister’s Policy and Strategy Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Secretariat during a regular weekly briefing on the progress of government activities, the adviser added that activities are underway to acquire various models of fourth-generation Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA), fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, VIP helicopters, and UAV systems.

Draft agreements sent for approval

A committee negotiation meeting has already prepared draft contracts for the J-10CE MRCA and the “1129ATTK” attack helicopter. These draft agreements have been sent to the Armed Forces Division and other relevant ministries for final approval.

The procurement process will be advanced if budget support is received within this financial year. Otherwise, these acquisition activities will be implemented in the next budget, Zahed explained.

Combat and cost logic behind J-10CE focus

Addressing discussions about the fighter jet purchase, Zahed confirmed there are active talks regarding Bangladesh potentially purchasing J-10CE fighters, noting that the choice is backed by recent combat experience.

“During a conflict between India and Pakistan, India’s Dassault Rafale was downed, and that was done by a Chinese jet,” Zahed said, adding that this information is now established.

He noted that while the Rafale is considered one of the most modern 4.5-generation fighters, Chinese multi-role fighters performed well against it in a combat situation, which is why Bangladesh has focused its attention on this direction.

In addition to combat performance, the adviser highlighted the financial advantages of Chinese aviation technology. “Compared to European fighters of similar quality, such as the Rafale or the Eurofighter Typhoon, the price of Chinese fighters is relatively much lower,” he said.

Zahed expressed hope that the government will take all necessary steps to ensure the defence of the people.
