Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan has said the ministry has already taken various initiatives to prepare a complete list of martyrs of the 1971 war.
He was responding to a question from lawmaker Md Ruhul Amin Dulal during the parliament session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
MP Ruhul Amin asked whether a list would be prepared of those who were martyred and victims of genocide during the war.
In reply, Minister Azam Khan also said the gazetted number of Liberation War martyrs stands at 6,480. This includes 3,698 civilian martyrs, 1,541 from the armed forces, 817 from the Border Guard, 423 police personnel, and one member of the Ansar force.
In addition, 560 intellectuals have been gazetted as martyrs, he informed.
He said that many people were victims of genocide during the war but regretted that even after so many years of independence, no accurate and complete list has been compiled.
Recognising the importance of the issue, the minister added the present government pledged in its election manifesto to prepare a full list of martyrs based on in‑depth research.
To implement this commitment, the ministry has already undertaken initiatives including convening expert meetings with Liberation War researchers, holding continuous consultations with stakeholders, and drafting a detailed, realistic action plan to guide the process.
He added that through these measures, it will be possible to prepare an accurate and widely accepted list of genocide victims and martyrs, ensuring proper recognition and honour for their sacrifice.
