The Local Government Division has taken an emergency initiative to resolve the chronic waterlogging issues at the border areas of Shamibag, under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and Kutubpur in Narayanganj.
The decision was reached during an emergency discussion meeting held on Wednesday at the conference room of the Local Government Division at the Secretariat.
Mir Shahe Alam, state minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, presided over the session.
According to the meeting’s resolutions, construction and renovation of roads and drainage systems will be launched immediately from Matuail Maa O Shishu Hospital to Shahidnagar Chowrasta.
These works will be implemented under the supervision of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). Officials expressed optimism that the successful implementation of the project would significantly alleviate the long-standing sufferings of the residents in these densely populated areas.
Addressing the meeting, State Minister Mir Shahe Alam emphasised that government projects must directly benefit the public and improve their quality of life. “We must give the highest priority to performing our duties,” he stated.
The state minister further instructed all relevant departments to ensure effective coordination during road excavation and construction. He stressed the importance of ensuring a proper flow of rainwater to prevent any accumulation during the monsoon season, according to press release.
Highlighting the government’s vision for clean and eco-friendly urbanisation, the state minister remarked, “Progress must be ensured through on-site inspections rather than rushing project implementation. The government wants every citizen to enjoy modern civic amenities”.
The high-level meeting was attended by senior officials from the Urban Development Sub-division of the Local Government Division, the chief executive officer of DSCC, the chief engineer, the chief waste management officer, and the regional executive officer of Zone-9.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Narayanganj Sadar, the concerned union parishad chairman, and senior representatives from LGED, the Water Development Board, and DPDC, were also present at the programme, among others.
