The government has set a target to raise the country’s installed electricity generation capacity to 35,000 megawatts by 2030, aiming to ensure uninterrupted and sustainable supply.
Currently, Bangladesh’s installed capacity stands at 28,919MW, including renewables, but uninterrupted and quality supply remains a challenge.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the target while unveiling the FY2026‑27 national budget in parliament on Thursday afternoon.
He said the government has prioritized transparency, efficiency and sustainability in power generation, storage and distribution.
Key initiatives include accelerated project implementation under a “quick implementation” policy; expansion of renewable energy and development of smart grids; and modernization of distribution networks to improve reliability.
These measures are expected to help meet the 2030 target while reducing dependence on costly imports and subsidies.
The minister also proposed allocation of Tk2,349 crore in the budget for Energy and Mineral Resources Division to strengthen energy security in the country.
He said, “The government has undertaken a range of initiatives to strengthen energy security by intensifying oil and gas exploration activities, increasing domestic production, expanding petroleum refining capacity and diversifying import sources.”
