The government has called for a unified and corruption-free response to the ongoing flood crisis, with Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stressing that seamless coordination is the only way to mitigate public suffering.
Presiding over an inter-ministerial meeting at the Cabinet Division conference room in Secretariat on Tuesday, Fakhrul directed all relevant ministries, departments, and organisations to work in unison to address the situation caused by recent heavy rainfall and hill runoff.
He emphasised that every agency must fulfill its duties diligently to ensure that rescue operations, relief distribution, healthcare, pure water supply, and infrastructure restoration reach the affected people swiftly.
During the session, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad said the government is working exhaustively under the direction of prime minister to manage the disaster.
He underscored the necessity of ensuring transparency and accountability in relief activities, asserting that aid must reach actual victims without any form of corruption.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury highlighted the need for an accurate database of those affected to make relief efforts more disciplined and effective. He also stressed the importance of keeping the supply chain and communication infrastructure operational during the crisis.
The meeting resulted in several key decisions regarding post-flood rehabilitation. It was decided that a food assistance programme would be launched based on a formal assessment of damage once floodwater recedes.
To support the agricultural sector, field-level officials have been directed to remain active and arrange the supply of new seeds to affected farmers.
Further directives were issued to ensure the supply of pure water and to strengthen healthcare services to prevent disease outbreaks in flood-hit regions.
On the infrastructure front, the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has been tasked with the rapid repair of damaged roads, while the Roads and Highways Department and relevant authorities will take measures to restore damaged highways and vital road links.
Government sources confirmed that coordinated rescue, relief, healthcare, and rehabilitation activities will continue until the flood situation returns to normal.
