Goalini Daily Full Cream Milk Powder has been ordered off the market after laboratory tests revealed major quality violations, leading SA Group Chairman Md Shahabuddin Alam to voluntarily confess to the charges.
He was fined Tk3 lakh on Wednesday following his admission of guilt at the Pure Food Court in Dhaka.
The Pure Food Court-2 of Special Metropolitan Magistrate Nusrat Sahara Bithi instructed the company to immediately withdraw the entire substandard batch from markets nationwide.
The court directed the company to report back in writing to both the Pure Food Court and the state, outlining the steps taken to comply with the withdrawal order.
A laboratory analysis conducted in October by the Dhaka South City Corporation’s safe food inspector found that the sample of ‘Goalini Daily Full Cream Milk Powder’ contained only 9.5 per cent milk protein, against a minimum requirement of 34 per cent.
The test also detected just 7.58 per cent milk fat, far below the required standard of more than 42 per cent, raising serious concerns about the product’s quality and safety.
Safe Food Inspector Mohammad Kamrul Hasan collected the sample in October and filed a case with the Pure Food Court after receiving the test results.
In similar recent cases, the Pure Food Court issued arrest warrants against senior officials of Meghna Group of Industries’ sugar unit and multinational Nestlé after irregularities were detected in their products. Both later secured bail.
However, in Nestlé’s KitKat case, Mozammel Hossain, owner of the supplier Sumaiya Enterprise, was sent to jail. He was granted bail on Wednesday after voluntarily admitting guilt before the court.
