Shubman Gill has reached the milestone of 1,000 runs as India’s captain, following an unbeaten 129 in the second Test against West Indies. His innings not only helped India consolidate their position in the ongoing series, but also brought with it a host of new records.
Gill has now scored 2,750 runs in the World Test Championship, making him India’s highest run-scorer in the competition’s history. He has overtaken Rishabh Pant at the top of that list. Only seven Indian cricketers have scored at least 2,000 runs in the World Test Championship, and Gill now leads them.
In the process of scoring his latest century, Gill completed 1,000 runs as captain across formats. He has scored 933 runs in Test matches and 170 in T20 internationals, bringing his total as captain to 1,103 runs. He becomes the third-fastest Indian captain to reach the 1,000-run mark. Only Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar have achieved it in fewer innings, reaching the milestone in just 15.
Gill also surpassed Rohit Sharma in another category. Before this match, both had scored nine centuries in the World Test Championship. With his latest hundred, Gill now stands alone with 10 centuries, becoming the Indian with the most centuries in the competition.
He has also equalled a record previously held solely by Virat Kohli. As captain, Kohli scored five centuries in a calendar year twice, in 2017 and 2018. Gill has now matched that feat in 2025, with five centuries to his name so far this year.
