Charli XCX has unveiled details of her upcoming album, ‘Wuthering Heights’, set for release on February 13 via Atlantic Records. Alongside the announcement, she has shared a new track from the album, titled ‘Chains of Love’.
The album draws inspiration from Charli’s collaboration with filmmaker Emerald Fennell on her new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel.
Speaking on Substack, the British singer explained, “I called Emerald to ask what she wanted from my take on the script. She coyly suggested ‘A song?’ and I said, ‘Why not an album?’ I wanted to explore a persona, a world that was raw, wild, sexual, gothic, British, tortured and full of proper sentences and punctuation. It was a total departure from my own life at the time, and I was completely in.”
Charli also highlighted the creative partnership behind Wuthering Heights, primarily with British producer and songwriter Finn Keane, formerly known as Easyfun.
“From the start, Finn and I were talking about Todd Haynes’ Velvet Underground documentary, and a quote from John Cale stuck with us: the band’s songs had to be both ‘elegant and brutal,’” she said. “That became our mantra while creating this album. Finn toured with me, and we rented studio space almost every day to work on the tracks.”
The 12-track album opens with ‘House’, a recent collaboration between Charli and Velvet Underground co-founder John Cale.
Wuthering Heights follows her previous releases, including Brat, its deluxe edition ‘Brat’ and ‘It’s the Same but There’s Three More Songs So It’s Not’ and the remix project Brat and ‘It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat’.
Fans can stream ‘Chains of Love’ now and look forward to the full album in February.
