The genuine “July fighters” cannot be involved in the chaos that took place during the signing ceremony of the July Charter, said BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed.
He further added, “Awami fascists may infiltrate there, but the true July Warriors’ cannot be involved in this.”
He made these remarks in response to questions during a press conference at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Sunday.
Salahuddin Ahmed further clarified that his comments regarding the July Charter had not been distorted, but rather shortened.
On Friday, before the signing ceremony of the July Charter at the South Plaza of the Parliament Building, a group of youths under the “July fighters” banner clashed with the police over various demands. During the confrontation, protesters vandalised and set fires in front of the Parliament building.
The ensuing chase between the police and protesters turned the area into a “battlefield,” resulting in several injuries. Following the incident, nearly 900 unidentified individuals have been named in five separate cases.
Regarding the July Charter, Salahuddin Ahmed emphasised, “The student uprising was the result of the continuous struggle of all political parties. It is the strength of our national life. Efforts have been made to honor those involved in the July Charter while ensuring they are not dragged into controversy.”
Salahuddin Ahmed also warned that any attempt to position BNP against the uprising would not succeed, adding, “I welcome NCP leader Nahid Islam’s statement on apologising to the nation.”
The BNP leader further mentioned, “Some incidents in the country are interlinked. Many believe there is an attempt to destabilise the country.” He urged that BNP’s statements should not be misrepresented or distorted.
